The UK's housing stock is some of the least energy efficient in western Europe, with energy usage in properties counting for 28% of the country’s CO2 emissions.

With many students moving into private accommodation with all inclusive bills as part of their tenancy, the University of Worcester Students’ Union has seen an opportunity to close the gap between concern about climate change among students, and actually adopting pro-environmental behaviour in the home.

Based on the NUS Student Switch Off model, Energize Worcestert trains students as energy advocates, creating cascade support for peer-to-peer influence.

Flowing from this will be student engagement with landlords, helping to create more energy efficient housing stock in ways which go beyond behavioural change. Using either the Green Deal, a similar model, or a bespoke framework, University of Worcester Students’ Union will put students at the heart of change in private accommodation sustainability.

Reaching over 10,000 students in participating homes, Energize Worcester engages students at a moment of change in their lives when they might lack obvious incentives to be energy efficient.
