Greenwich Sustainability Hub

Greenwich Sustainability Hub's purpose is to increase positive environmental behaviours amongst students and the community through student-led activities and outreach work with local organisations. Our work includes:

  • Outreach to schools – providing education for sustainable development in local schools and colleges. Part of this work also includes developing staff training sessions and an online toolkit for sustainability champions. Current achievements to-date include delivering a workshop on the history of agriculture and sustainability impacts at the historical Winter Garden in Eltham, and another on ‘Future Cities’ in partnership with Hadlow College.

  • Outreach to businesses and colleges – we are currently working with an outdoor education charity with centres across the UK, local historical attractions and museums, an agricultural college and a music and dance conservatoire to help them to gain Green Impact accreditation.

  • Student engagement through events and activities - to date, we have run Greek Week activities for students and staff including swap shops and bee hive tours, promoted Fairtrade Fortnight and ran a Co-operative sponsored Fairtrade Wine and Cheese night featuring a guest speaker from an Argentinian Winery. We have also launched our Grow at Home initiative giving out windowsill kits to students to grow their own micro-greens and have support student led sustainability projects through our Campaigns and Project fund. We have even more plans for fun events and activities in the year ahead including a sustainability show!

Greenwich Sustainability Hub makes the students' union more sustainable through achieving Green Impact Gold by 2015 and setting up a new Colleges Network to share best practice between local institutions and create better links with the community so that best practice is shared.

As well as engaging more students in sustainability and making a positive impact on sustainable behaviours and understanding of sustainability issues, the project also strives to improve the employability skills of students. GSH employs dix student staff each year, each responsible for a portfolio of work and for volunteer recruitment and management, making it very much student-led.
